A practical starting point for a real public server—not a slot-count marketing guess.
Short answer
Start at 8 GB for a typical 50-player server. Use 10–12 GB for large Workshop maps, RocketMod/OpenMod stacks or database-heavy plugins.
01
What 50 players actually changes
Player count raises entity, inventory, network and plugin work. The map and plugin stack often move the baseline more than the slot number.
6 GB: lean vanilla/light Workshop test
8 GB: sensible public-server baseline
10–12 GB: large map or heavier plugins
Leave 20–25% peak headroom
02
RAM is not a CPU substitute
If simulation or a plugin blocks the main game loop, unused memory will not remove the lag. Track sustained CPU, save duration and database latency alongside RAM.
Profile at real peak times
Remove one suspect plugin at a time
Check save duration before upgrading
Prefer strong single-thread performance
03
Before choosing a tier
Load the complete Workshop list, join with several clients, trigger a save and restart. Size from the peak after warm-up—not the empty-server number.
Full map and assets loaded
Production plugin configuration
Database connected
Backup and restart tested
